As of fall 2001, 19 academic departments have participated in the Writing-in-the-Major Project, combining the efforts of more than 100 instructors.

As of August 2001, five departments have had writing-in-the-major programs approved by the General Education Committee as alternative means for students to fulfill their general education requirements. The remaining departments are in various phases of developing their programs.
