A volunteer is one who is not content merely to change as the world around them changes. A volunteer wishes to be in the vanguard of a movement for improvement. A volunteer is determined to achieve the highest humanity through leading the way toward constructive relationship with others. -Earl Nightnigale

Participation
All Vanguards are expected to participate in their equal share of activities. The executive committee and the advisor will monitor Vanguard participation. Members may be called upon to justify a lack of participation, in which case the advisor will designate appropriate action to be taken. Continued lack of participation may result in being released from Vanguard.

Tours/Meetings/Athletic Events
Members are expected to attend all Vanguard meetings, check in once a week, work as ticket takers/sellers at athletic events, and conduct all assigned tours. The first unexcused absence from an assigned tour, activity, or athletic event will be considered the first warning. Multiple unexcused absences may warrant dismissal from the organization. If you are late for a tour and the Admissions Office has to find a replacement, it will be
considered an unexcused absence or missed tour.

An absence will be considered "excused" only if
• A replacement is found for any assigned tours that you cannot conduct.
• Vanguard receives an approved dismissal from the advisor.

Socials
Although Vanguard social activities are not mandatory, they are considered to be an extremely important component of Vanguard participation. One successful element of an organization is the camaraderie between group members. Therefore, attendance at socials is expected.

Length of Membership
Vanguards who uphold the by-laws and actively participate in the organization may return for a second year, if they have two semesters remaining on campus. Student teaching does not count toward the two semesters. Membership is limited to two years in order to allow other students an opportunity to participate in the organization.
