Undergraduate Research & Creativity Grants
Grants are available on a competitive basis to support undergraduate and international undergraduate research and creativity activities to all full-time (12+ credits) and part-time (1-11 credits) UW-L undergraduates. Two competitions are held each year—one during spring semester and one during fall semester. Projects within the US can be funded for up to $1,500 when one student is involved and up to $1,650 when there are two or more students. Projects involving international travel can be funded for up to $2,100. Collaborative projects involving two or more students are allowed for both domestic and international projects; students must determine how their stipends would be split.

Step-by-step process of submitting a grant:
-
Student(s), with the guidance of a faculty mentor and in consultation with the Office of International Education (where applicable), writes the proposal, develops an appropriate budget, collects the necessary documentation and fills out the necessary forms (see checklist).
-
Student(s) prints the Coversheet.
-
Student(s) puts all information and documentation – except for the Coversheet – into a single PDF file (or Word document if necessary) in the following order:
-
Budget Summary
-
Previously Funded Research Form (if needed)
-
Faculty Mentor Letter of Support
-
Unofficial Transcript (not SNAP)
-
Proposal Narrative
-
Student(s) emails the file to their mentor for them to examine one last time and then, after completing any changes, has the mentor sign the Coversheet.
-
Student(s) emails the proposal file to the Department Chair for examination and then, if/when approved, has the Department Chair sign the Coversheet.
-
If for an International Undergraduate Student Research Grant, the student(s) emails the proposal to Office of International Education (please email to sieber.sand@uwlax.edu)for examination and approval and then has them sign the Coversheet.
-
Student then scans in the Coversheet (scanners are available in the Library if needed) and adds it as the first page of the proposal file.
-
Student(s) send the completed proposal file in PDF or Word format, no later than 4pm on the day of the deadline to: stdtresearch@uwlax.edu
Please note that it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the proposal file contains all required information and forms. Additionally, as each may have their own submission deadlines, it is the responsibility of the student to consult with their mentor, department chair and the Office of International Education (where applicable) so that signatures can be acquired in a timely manner.
If funded, students are required to:
-
Present the results of their work at the annual UW-L Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creativity, approximately one year following receipt of the award.
-
Submit a final report using the Qualtrics electronic form to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. The form will be available in the near future.
