English as a Second Language (ESL) Institute

Admission

The English as a Second Language Institute at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse offers courses at five levels of English proficiency from beginning to advance level.  The ESL Institute provides instruction for those who wish to strengthen their English skills for personal or professional reasons or to meet the requirements for degree study at UW-L.

ESL Institute Important Features:

  • No TOEFL is required for admission
  • On-campus housing is available
  • Advanced ESL level students can also enroll in university academic courses
  • Language partners and friendship family opportunities are available
  • Enrollment at the university and receipt of a university transcript indicating your ESL courses and results

To apply for ESL admission, please follow the steps below:

Step 1: Complete the UW-L ESL application process.  You may select one of the following methods to apply:
Step 2: Complete a UW-L Background Information Form.
Step 3: Submit Official Educational Documents.  Official records (transcripts, certificates, mark sheets) of all subjects taken and results received during high school study and any post-secondary study are required. Photocopies are acceptable for the ESL study.  English translation must accompany native language documents.
Step 4: Complete a Certification of Financial Resources Form with a supporting bank statement and a letter of support.
Step 5: Submit a Processing Fee ($50 USD).  The fee is required and is non-refundable.  It should be made payable in U.S. dollars to the “University of Wisconsin-La Crosse”.  Please send payment by money order, bank draft, or U.S. check.
Step 6: Secure housing: International Student Residence Hall Reservation Form and Contract Acceptance

Applicants will receive an email confirmation of their application packet arrival and information regarding their admission status. An acceptance decision is determined after all required items arrive.  Students who meet all requirements for acceptance to the university will receive a letter of acceptance, proper immigration papers, and travel information by regular mail. Admission and immigration documents are by express mail service if payment of $40 USD (payable to UW-La Crosse) is submitted for this service.
