News - December 2009

Hello everyone,

As a new feature for MVAC members, I will be e-mailing you from time-to-time with updates on MVAC activities, research and news. Snow has curtailed our field work for now but we are still plenty busy! Here’s what’s happening at MVAC as our work moves indoors for the next few months.

You may have recently seen Wendy Holtz-Leith in the newspaper and on the evening news as she worked to clear U.S. Fish and Wildlife land for a new visitor’s center and headquarters near Brice Prairie. If you missed the article in the La Crosse Tribune you can read it on MVAC’s News page at: http://www.uwlax.edu/mvac/NewsReviews/news.htm.

Bonnie Jancik is busy working with Dr. James Theler and Katherine Stevenson on a grant-funded National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute for School Teachers. The Institute which will bring 25 teachers from around the United States to UW-L for three weeks this summer to learn how people have lived and adapted to the area over the past 13,500 years. Recruitment activities are currently underway. For more information about the Institute visit: http://www.uwlax.edu/mvac/neh.htm.

If you were unable to attend MVAC’s recent Annual Banquet, you can catch up by visiting MVAC’s News page (http://www.uwlax.edu/mvac/NewsReviews/news.htm) to see pictures from the banquet and read about this year’s Award Recipients – Dr. James Theler received the James P. Gallagher Award, Robert Keiper received the Regional Archaeology Award, and Robert “Ernie” Boszhardt received the Archaeology Education Award. This page also recognizes all the volunteers who generously give of their time to help MVAC throughout the year.

If you’re looking for a good book to snuggle up with this winter then you may want to check out MVAC’s Book Reviews at: (http://www.uwlax.edu/mvac/NewsReviews/BookReview/BookReview.htm). Each month Bill Gresens, former board member and long-time MVAC supporter and friend, reviews archaeology related fiction from well known authors such as Elizabeth Peters to up and coming authors such as Mary Anna Evans. There are enough reviews to keep you busy until spring!

Don’t forget MVAC when you’re doing your holiday shopping. Consider an MVAC membership, tee-shirt or book for that person on your list that’s interested in archaeology. Stop by MVAC during regular business hours (short term parking available outside the building) to make your purchases.

As you’re changing calendars remember to mark the Artifact Show on March 13, our lecture on recent excavations at Troy on April 7, and the member field survey on May 1 & 2. Spring will be here before you know it! All MVAC’s events for 2010 can be found on-line at: http://www.uwlax.edu/mvac/EventsDisplays/EventDisplay.htm.

Please stop by the lab or e-mail any of the staff with ideas, questions or artifacts to ID.

All MVAC’s staff wishes you a happy holiday season!
