Washburn Academy - Project Archaeology: Exploring the
Past in the Coulee Region
Did you ever wonder what life in the Coulee Region was like
before Europeans arrived? Who were the area’s residents? What was their world
like? How did their way of life change through time? Where are they now? And, of
particular interest to educators—how do we know about such things?
Archaeologists are popularly viewed as detectives who search for clues to solve
the mysteries of the past. But they’re also highly trained specialists who bring
a range of science- and humanities-based approaches to this unusual work.
Fascinating subject matter combined with a multidisciplinary approach makes
archaeology an engaging subject for students and teachers alike—and one that can
be adapted to a wide range of classroom applications. In fact, archaeology can
be the perfect vehicle for interdisciplinary, hands-on lessons that encourage
the use of higher-level thinking skills. This session's combination of lessons,
hands-on activities, and a field trip will enable you to explore how
archaeologists do their work, and what they’ve learned so far about the Coulee
Region’s first residents. You’ll also experience some great activities that you
can easily apply in your classroom.
Participants will receive Project
Archaeology training and several classroom resources.
NOTE: A special grant from The Bureau of Land
Management – Eastern States Cultural Heritage Program will pay the $50
registration fee for the first 12 applications.
