My area of expertise is in the field of Biomechanics and Research Methods. I joined the Physical Therapy Program in 1996 after post doctoral training at the University of Minnesota. Biomechanics is the science that examines forces acting upon and within a biological structure and the effects produced by such forces (Hay, 1973). Thus, we use the concepts of physics, engineering and biology to study the structure and function of biological systems using the knowledge and methods of mechanics. Specifically, in physical therapy and rehabilitation we typically study the factors influencing a individual's performance. For example, we may describe the changes in knee joint forces after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction or how loading in the lower extremities change with running fatigue. Come visit our lab in the Health Science Center and learn what we are all about!
