Bruce E. May
Interim Dean & Professor of Management

 

Bruce E. May was appointed Interim Dean in September 2006 after Dr. Bill Colclough was asked to serve as Interim Vice Chancellor of Finance.  Bruce joined the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in July 2002 as Associate Dean and Professor of Management.  In 2003, he also assumed the duties of MBA Director.  From 1992-2002 he was a faculty member at the University of South Dakota (USD) where he attained the rank of full professor.  From 2001-2002 he served as the Acting Associate Dean at the USD School of Business.  Among his university recognitions have been the Award for Outstanding Service and Scholarship at the School of Business (1998) and the Belbas-Larson Award for Teaching Excellence (1996) which is the University of South Dakota’s most prestigious teaching award. While at USD he was very active in international and technology initiatives. 

 

He served as Director of the Center for Transatlantic Studies, Coordinator of International Programs, Coordinator of International Internships, and co-director of the Midwest International Internship Business Consortium. He has been awarded and directed four major institutional grants from the United States Department of Education directed at internationalization. His latest grant was awarded to UW-L in 2005 in the amount of $174,562.  He has also served as a consultant to other universities and the U.S. Department of Education with regard to international programs.  

 

He was a founding faculty member in the USD Center for Instructional Design and Delivery aimed at implementing technology into the classroom.  He is a past director and chairman of the board of the University of South Dakota Press, the book publishing division of the University of South Dakota. Prior to moving to South Dakota he resided in San Diego, California where he gained substantial management and business experience. He was the co-owner and associate publisher of a legal publishing company in Southern California and the co-founder of another legal publishing company in New York.  While operating his businesses he also served as a lecturer in law at California Western School of Law in San Diego, CA.  Prior to establishing his businesses he practiced business law in Southern California.  He devoted most of his practice to business litigation and financial reorganizations in the San Diego and Los Angeles areas. 

 

Before beginning his business, law, and academic careers he was a Naval Flight Officer in the U.S. Navy where he flew from aircraft carriers as a mission commander in the E-2C “Hawkeye” airborne early warning aircraft.  He has operated off four different aircraft carriers and in numerous areas of the world.  He holds the military rank of Commander.  His teaching and academic interests include ecommerce and cyber law, curriculum internationalization, international business, international law, commercial law, regulation, and privacy.  

 

He has authored two research books used by California attorneys and judges to research case holdings related to specific areas of civil law.  In addition, he has published numerous articles and papers in a wide variety of journals and other publications and has presented his research at regional, national, and international conferences.  He is a member of the California and Minnesota bars, and is licensed to practice before the federal courts and the U.S. Tax Court. 

 

His personal interests include travel, the arts, skiing, running, kayaking, biking and mountain trekking.  He and his spouse have climbed and/or trekked mountains in the Himalayas (Nepal), Andes (Peru), and Mt. Kilimanjaro (Africa).  He also draws and paints.  He holds the following degrees:  a Bachelor of Science in psychology (University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire), a Doctorate of Business Administration in international business (United States International University), and a Juris Doctor degree (University of San Diego).  He is a native of Niagara, Wisconsin.
