UW-L Wins Home Opener; Perkins Records 370th Win

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team opened its 2009 home schedule with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-23) victory over UW-Stevens Point Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall.
The Eagles improve to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pointers fall to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in the conference. It is UW-L's 20th victory in the last 21 meetings with UW-Stevens Point, including the fourth straight.
Head coach Sheila Perkins earned her 370th career win at UW-L with Wednesday's victory. She is 370-162 in 16 seasons at the helm of the Eagles.
Brianne Stankus led UW-L with 14 kills Wednesday while recording one hitting error in 30 attempts (.433 average). Kate Malterer added seven kills and Melany Vanden Langenberg had six for the Eagles. Liz Schlobohm recorded 36 assists as UW-L hit .252.
Melannie Tate led the Eagles with 12 digs while Stankus finished with 11.
Pam Nora led UW-Stevens Point with nine kills while Kaitlin Wolfe and Christina Brinkman each had seven. Chantel York and Wolfe each had 13 assists as the Pointers hit .143 as a team. Kati Rau recorded 13 digs while Lizzy Taylor added 11.
UW-L returns to action Friday, Sept. 25 at the UW-Whitewater Invitational. The Eagles face Heidelberg College (Ohio) at 3 p.m. and Illinois Wesleyan University at 7 p.m.
