UW-L Leads After First Day of WIAC Championships; Fondow Wins Long Jump

Superior, Wis. – The UW-La Crosse women’s track & field team is in first-place after the day one of competition at the WIAC Indoor Championships being held at UW-Superior. The Eagles have 75.33 team points while UW-River Falls is second with 39.0 and UW-Oshkosh third with 37.5.

UW-Eau Claire is in fourth-place (32.83) followed by UW-Stout (23.33), UW-Stevens Point (12.0), UW-Whitewater (8.5), UW-Superior (3.0) and UW-Platteville (2.5).

UW-L's Katie Fondow captured the long jump title Friday (18-8 1/2) while teammates Caitlin Schetter (18-5) and Krista Kopetsky (17-6 3/4) placed second and third. The Eagles' Ashton May was fifth in the long jump (17-2) and Jessie Schulz seventh (16-10 1/2).

The Eagles' distance medley relay finished second (12:26.13) while Kristen Howe placed sixth (18:34.47) and Whitney Nefstead seventh (18:42.04) in the 5,000-meter run.

Other top field event finishes Friday included Jamie Scott placing second in the pole vault (11-8 1/2) while Alecia Ellingstad and Tiffany Ness tied for fourth (11-2 1/2) and Kaitlin Genthe was sixth (10-8 3/4). The Eagles' Christy Bohl was fourth in the shot put (43-0 1/2).

In the high jump, Jenna Starck tied for fourth (4-11 3/4) while Sara Mitchell tied for sixth (4-11 3/4) and Kayla Johnson tied for eighth (4-9 3/4).

In preliminary track action Friday, Ellingstad (8.75), Scott (8.84) and Maggie May (8.84) all advanced to Saturday's 55-meter hurdles. Sara Duchow (7.38), Schetter (7.42) and Cassie Grosse (7.48) advanced in the 55-meter dash while Caitlin Perra (59.41), Danica Schaefer (1:00.09), Abby Lien (1:00.19), Ashley Pershing (1:00.67) and Kayla Raduka (1:01.44) advanced in the 400-meter dash.

Three runners, Duchow (25.87), Katie Steingraeber (26.30) and Caitlin Wippermann (26.50) advanced in the 200-meter dash while Maggie Leyendecker moved on in the 800-meter run (2:20.38).
