Swimming & Diving Teams Sweep UW-Whitewater

La Crosse, Wis. - The UW-La Crosse women's and men's swimming and diving teams swept a WIAC dual with UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles' women's squad won 179-62 while the men's team won 142-99.

The UW-L women finish 4-0 in WIAC duals this season while the Eagles' men's team finishes 3-1.

In women's action, 10 different UW-L athletes won an event. Clare Hathaway took the 50 freestyle (25.42), Brianna Peyer the 100 freestyle (54.75), Danielle Rux the 200 freestle (2:01.70) and Janelle Callahan the 500 freestyle (5:33.49).

Nora Tetskoski captured the 200 I.M. (2:20.15) for the Ealges while Elisabeth Misener won the 100 butterfly (1:02.56). Jennifer Bryson took the 100 backstroke (1:04.20) and Elizabeth Hausauer the 200 breaststroke (2:31.36).

UW-L also took first in both diving events as Amanda Medendorp won the 1-meter competition (275.95 points) and Kristina Wanous the 3-meter (261.20).

The Eagles also won the 400 medley relay (4:01.37) with the team of Kristi Parker, Sarah Russart, Chelsea Hoff and Katelyn Hartung. UW-L's 200 freestyle relay of Hoff, Peyer, Rux and Hathaway also finished first (1:38.42).

Second-place finishers included: Medendorp in the 3-meter diving (240.60) and Wanous in the 1-meter diving (267.75). Jennifer Kolmos was second in the 1,000 freestyle (11:35.09) while Parker placed second in the 100 butterfly (1:02.86). Anita Talavera placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:08.12) and Lauren Sweeney was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.59).

In men's action, Michael Kirschling and Karl Richters both won two events for UW-L. Kirschling captured the 50 (22.40) and 100 (48.82) freestyle while Richters won the 200 I.M. (1:59.92) and 200 breaststroke (2:17.78).

Other winners for the Eagles included: Matthew Diehl in the 200 freestyle (1:48.99), Michael Beilman in the 100 butterfly (54.66), Casey Borden in the 100 backstroke (57.18) and Matthew Schmerbauch in the 500 freestyle (5:06.30).

UW-L also took the 400 medley relay (3:39.34) with Benjamin Knutson, Cole Swanson, Lance Scadden and Micah Fulmer.

Colin Schmidt and Tanner Classon recorded a pair of second-place finishes. Schmidt was second in the 100 (50.38) and 1,000 (10:33.11) freestyle while Classon placed second in the 1-meter (211.30 points) and 3-meter (203.45) diving.

Anthony Schmidt finished second in the 200 I.M. (2:03.62) and Bill Shuster was second in the 500 freestyle (5:09.77). The Eagles' 200 freestyle relay of Shuster, Ryan Ostrowski, Dan McConnell and Colin Schmidt was also second (1:33.22).

UW-L returns to action Thursday, February 21 at the WIAC Championships in Oshkosh, Wisconsin at 10 a.m.
