UW-L Sweeps City Rival Viterbo in Home Opener

La Crosse, Wis. – The UW-La Crosse softball team improved to 15-5 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of city rival Viterbo University Thursday afternoon at North Campus Field. It was the home opener for the Eagles as they improve to 28-8 all-time against the V-Hawks. Viterbo falls to 0-18 on the season. UW-L won the opener, 3-1, and the nightcap, 2-0.

In the opener, designated the Wells Fargo Diamond Cup, Heather Schultz and Kaylyn Von Glahn combined on a four-hitter for UW-L. Schultz started and went 5.0 innings to earn the victory, allowing three hits, one run and two walks while striking out seven. Von Glahn picked up the save, going 2.0 innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts.

The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning as Rachel Weyer scored on a V-Hawks fielding error and Cara Salm had an RBI single knocking in Jenna Ahnen. UW-L added a run in the third on Katie Keyes' single scoring Ahnen. Viterbo got its only run of the day on Betsy Ward's solo home run in the top of the fourth.

Salm finished 3-for-3 with an RBI for UW-L while Ahnen was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Weyer was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Keyes finished 2-for-2 with an RBI.

In the nightcap, Lacey Probst and Von Glahn combined on a three-hit shutout. Probst went 5.0 innings, allowing three hits and one walk with two strikeouts to earn the victory while Von Glahn picked up her second save of the day. She pitched the final 2.0 innings with four strikeouts.

Ahnen and Salm had back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the first to give UW-L a 1-0 lead and Ahnen later added an RBI single in the fifth to score Weyer. Ahnen finished 2-for-3 in the second game of the doubleheader with one run scored and an RBI.

UW-L returns to action Thursday, April 2 hosting UW-Oshkosh in the WIAC opener at 3 p.m.
