Mens Wrestling- Coaching Staff
Head Coach Dave Malecek
Dave Malecek begins his third season as UW-La Crosse's head wrestling coach in 2008-09. He has led the Eagles to back-to-back top-three finishes at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships, placing third in 2007 and second in 2008. For his efforts, Malecek was named the 2007 NCAA Rookie Coach of the Year.
Malecek has also guided UW-L to two straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) titles and been selected the Mertz Mortorelli WIAC Coach of the Year both seasons. The Eagles, who are 34-3 in duals under Malecek, have won 11 consecutive conference crowns.
Malecek
served as the head assistant coach at Wartburg College (Iowa) from 2000 to 2006, helping
lead the Knights to three NCAA Division III Championships (2003, 2004, 2006).
He was selected the NCAA Division III Assistant Coach of the Year in 2006. Wartburg
also won Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) titles every season
since his arrival on campus. The Knights had 11 national champions and 47 All-America
selections since Malecek begin coaching in 2000.
Malecek was also Wartburgs Wrestling Recruiting Coordinator, Summer Wrestling
Camp Director and handled the upper weight classes for the Knights.
A four-time NCAA Division I qualifier at Northern Iowa University (1991-94),
Malecek earned All-America accolades in 1994 with a fourth-place finish at 177-pounds.
He served as the Panthers team captain in 1993 and 1994 and ranks seventh
in career victories at Northern Iowa. Malecek earned his bachelors (1994)
and masters (2005) degrees from Northern Iowa.
He was a participant in the United States Olympic Wrestling Trials in
1992 and 1996. Malecek was also a two-time state champion at Osage (Iowa) High
School.
Malecek spent two years as head coach at Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, where he recorded 31 dual victories. Xavier also had 10 state qualifiers
and one state champion under Maleceks guidance.
Along with his coaching responsibilities at Wartburg, Malecek has served as an instructor in the physical education department since 2001. He has also taught at Wright Elementary School in Cedar Rapids (1997-2000) and in the Aurelia, Iowa Schools (1994-96).
Head Assistant Coach Derek Fuglsang
Derek Fuglsang is in his second year as an assistant coach at UW-La Crosse in 2008-09, his first as the Eagles' head assistant coach. He graduated from Coe College (Iowa) in 2007. A native of Maquoketa, Iowa, Fuglsang was a two-time Academic All-America selection at Coe. He finished with 67 wins for the Kohawks and was a two-year team captain.
Fuglsang earned his degree in physical/health education and elementary education with a reading and coaching endorsement. He is currently teaching at Sparta (Wis.) High School.
Graduate Assistant Coach Tony Ganas
Tony Ganas begins his third year as an assistant coach with the Eagles
in 2008-09. A 2003 graduate of Wartburg College (Iowa), Ganas was an Iowa Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference champion and earned NCAA Division III All-America honors
with the Knights. He earned his degree in public relations and electronic media.
Prior to joining the UW-L coaching staff, Ganas was an account executive for
CareerBuilder.
He served as the head coach of the Raptor Wrestling Club (freestyle/Greco wrestling
club) and coached a youth swimming club in Chicago. Ganas was also a coach/athlete
while participating in an international exchange in Bulgaria and Paris. He has
also co-hosted a Turkish wrestling team while in Iowa.
Ganas is currently working on his masters degree in special education.
Volunteer Assistant Coach Billy Huebner
Billy Huebner, a 1999 graduate of UW-La Crosse, is in his 12th season coaching for the Eagles in 2008-09. Huebner's main duties are to serve as the recruiting coordinator and fundraising coordinator for the program. He also serves as a clinician for the UW-L wrestling camps.
Huebner resides in La Crosse and is pursuing a masters degree from Winona State University.
Student Assistant Coach Ryan Allen
Ryan Allen is in his third year as a student assistant coach at UW-La
Crosse in 2008-09 after earning four letters for the Eagles. He finished his
career with a mark of 161-14, recording the most wins in school history. Allen
went 41-5 in 2005-06, 46-5 in 2004-05, 38-2 in 2003-04 and 36-2 in 2002-03.
He recorded 53 career wins by fall.
Allen became the first wrestler in school history to earn four career NCAA
Division III All-America honors, winning national championships in the heavyweight
division in 2004, 2005 and 2006 and placing second in 2003. Allen, who compiled
a record of 16-1 in four NCAA III Championship appearances, became the first
wrestler in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) history and
ninth in Division III history to win three individual national championships.
He was the first wrestler to win three
heavyweight national titles.
A native of Livingston, Wisconsin, Allen was named the WIAC Wrestler of the
Year in 2004 and 2005. He won four straight heavyweight titles at the WIAC Championships,
becoming the third wrestler in league history to accomplish the feat.
Graduate Assistant Coach Jason Lulloff
Jason Lulloff is in his second year as an graduate assistant coach at
UW-La Crosse in 2008-09 after earning four letters for the Eagles. He completed
his career with a record of 140-22 at UW-L, ranking third in school history
in victories.
He placed third at the 2007 NCAA Division III Championships at 184-pounds for
his fourth career All-America honor. Lulloff became the second wrestler in school
history to earn four career All-America accolades (Ryan Allen) as he finished
third in 2003, 2006 and 2007 and fourth in 2004. He went 15-5 in four national
championship appearances.
The 2007 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Max Sparger Wrestling Scholar-Athlete, Lulloff was named to the 2007 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large Second Team. He was also a three-time member of the National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar Team. A three-year team captain, Lulloff won three WIAC individual titles for UW-L.
Graduate Assistant Coach Josh Chelf
Josh Chelf is in his first year as an graduate assistant coach at UW-La Crosse in 2008-09 after winning his second consecutive NCAA Division III Championship at 174-pounds in 2008. A native of Irma, Wisconsin, Chelf became the third wrestler in UW-L history to earn four career All-America awards, joining Ryan Allen and Jason Lulloff. Along with his national championships in 2007 and 2008, Chelf placed third in 2006 and sixth in 2005. He finished 14-4 in four tournament appearances.
Chelf was 40-3 in 2007-08 with a team-leading 20 pins and selected the NCAA Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Meet at the 2008 national championships. He was named to the 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American College Division Men’s At-Large Second Team and selected the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Max Sparger Wrestling Scholar-Athlete after compiling a 3.55 grade point average in exercise sport science-teaching.
He was selected the WIAC Wrestler of the Year in 2007 and 2008. Chelf won three conference titles at 174-pounds (2006, 2007, 2008) and placed second once (2005) while being a member of four league championship teams. He also helped the Eagles to a second-place team finish at the 2008 NCAA Championships. Chelf ended his career with a record of 153-24, ranking second in school history in victories.
