UW-L Opens Dual Season with Split at Luther College

Decorah, Iowa - The UW-La Crosse men’s tennis team opened its 2009 season splitting a pair of duals at Luther College Friday night. The Eagles fell 8-1 to the host Norse before coming back to earn an 8-1 victory over Central College (Iowa).

UW-L's Nathan Fekete picked up the team's only win against Luther, defeating Aaron Gendron at No. 3 singles (5-7, 7-6, 10-3).

The Eagles' Joey Van Lieshout (No.1), Nick Piotrowski (No. 2), Steven Quiring (No. 4), Doug Marmar (No. 5) and John Hildebrandt (No. 6) all lost in singles play.

In doubles play, Piotrowski/Van Lieshout (No. 1), Fekete/Quiring (No. 2) and Jon Mahvi/Paul Vickers (No. 3) fell to Luther.

UW-L came back to win all six of its singles matches with Central College. Van Lieshout defeated Luke Boyd at No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-4), Piotrowski defeated Dan Bowser at No. 2 (6-1, 6-4) and Fekete beat Jacob Dreyer at No. 3 (6-0, 6-2). Quiring defeated Seth Harris at No. 4 singles (6-0, 6-2) while Marmar defeated Chris Lensing at No. 5 (6-0, 6-0) and Mahvi beat Jacob Veldhuizen at No. 6 (6-0, 6-2).

Van Lieshout/Piotrowski defeated Boyd/Bowser at No. 1 doubles (9-7) while Fekete/Quiring beat Dreyer/Harris at No. 2 (8-2). Central's Veldhuizen/Lensing earned a win over Hildebrandt/Sam Talarczyk at No. 3 doubles (8-6).

UW-L returns to action Saturday, Feb. 7 against Carleton College (Minn.) in Winona, Minn. at 3 p.m.
