UW-L Finishes Second at WIAC Championships

Oshkosh, Wis. - The UW-La Crosse men's swimming & diving team finished second at the 2008 WIAC Championships Saturday night in UW-Oshkosh's Albee Hall. The Eagles recorded 794 team points while UW-Stevens Point captured its ninth straight conference title with 928 points. It marks UW-L's eighth consecutive second-place finish at the league championships.

UW-Eau Claire finished third Saturday with 619 points followed by UW-Whitewater (463), UW-Oshkosh (241) and UW-River Falls (179).

In Saturday's action, UW-L's Michael Hruska captured the 200 breaststroke with an NCAA Division III "B" qualifying time of 2:07.70. The Eagles' Karl Richters placed third in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.71).

UW-L won the 400 freestyle relay Saturday night as Tony Wolff, Christopher Boyle, Michael Beilman and Matthew Diehl won with a time of 3:05.85. The Eagles earned a "B" national qualifying time and also set a pool record.

Other top finishers included Boyle placing second (46.84) and Diehl third (47.09) in the 100 freestyle. Anthony Schmidt was second (1:58.09) and Wolff fourth (2:00.24) in the 200 butterfly while Lance Scadden was third (1:57.68) and Casey Borden fifth (1:59.58) in the 200 backstroke.
