Head Coach Larry Terry
Larry Terry begins his eighth season as head coach of the Eagles in 2007. He has led UW-L to three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) titles (2002, 2003, 2004) and guided the Eagles to four appearances in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Playoffs in his first seven years.
UW-L
is coming off a 9-2 mark a year ago, its 35th winning season in the last 37
seasons. The Eagles went 6-1 in the WIAC last year, finishing in second-place.
UW-L advanced to the NCAA III Playoffs in 2006, defeating Bethel University
(Minn.) 28-21 in the first round before a 24-21 loss at second-ranked UW-Whitewater
in the second round.
He has been selected the WIAC Coach of the Year three times (2002, 2003, 2004).
Terry is no stranger to the UW-L program and tradition. Terry, 51, was a 13-year-old
ballboy when his father, Bill, served as an assistant coach for La Crosse. Larry
went on to eventually play at UW-L, starring as a kickoff returner, before beginning
his own coaching career.
Terry coached Ripon College to a 25-29-1 record - including a conference championship
- in six seasons during the mid-80s. With his 49-25 (.662) mark at UW-L, Terry
enters the 2007 campaign with a 74-54-1 (.578) career record in 13 years. Along
with the head coaching stint at Ripon, he also served as offensive line coach
at John Carroll University for three seasons and spent one season at Bowling
Green State University as a graduate assistant.
Since Terry joined the Eagles’ staff as offensive coordinator in 1988,
UW-L has compiled a 165-50 (.767) record, won 11WIAC titles, and made four national
championship game appearances, winning two. Terry earned a bachelor’s degree
in physical and health education from UW-L in 1977, a master’s degree in
physical education from Bowling Green in 1978, and a doctorate in athletic administration
from the University of New Mexico in 1990. While at New Mexico he chose to do
his dissertation on the academic performance of athletes. He continues to show
a strong commitment to the academic success of his athletes and believes that
football is the “icing on the academic cake.”
He has assembled an experienced coaching staff and is well known for his ability
to recruit student-athletes by showing genuine interest in their future. “Our
staff works well together because of our familiarity,” says Terry. “We
all share the same thoughts on a strong family approach which has been so important
to our success. We’ll continue to make good judgments on ability and talent.
I know that we have some of the top assistant coaches in Division III football.”
“We will continue the approach of the past as far as treating student-athletes
well, along with being a teaching and caring staff,” explains Terry. “We
coach players in a positive manner and look for the good in each individual.”
He also expects his players to be well-rounded student athletes. “We continually
stress the importance of performing well on and off the field. We want our student-athletes
to be outstanding students and citizens and represent our community and university
in the very best possible way.”

Assistant Coaches
Mike Anderson, Offensive Line. Coach Anderson begins his ninth season as offensive line coach and 13th overall with the Eagles. His first four years were as offensive backfield coach. Anderson was head coach for six seasons at La Crosse Central High School, compiling a 27-3 conference record and claiming five league championships. He led the Red Raiders to five post-season appearances, making it to two semi-finals. A 1973 graduate of UW-Eau Claire, he was a three-time letter winner in football.
Frank Tierney, Wide Receivers. Coach Tierney returns for a ninth
year with the coaching staff, working with wide receivers. He is a 1973 graduate
of Manhattan College where he led the team in receptions and touchdowns as a
senior. Tierney also coached football in his hometown of Mahopac, New York.
He holds a master’s degree from UW-L (1998) and is an advisor in the university's
academic advising center.
Dr. Mick Miyamoto, Offensive Coordinator/Tight Ends. Coach Miyamoto
returns to the Eagles’ coaching staff for the eighth straight season following
a nine-year hiatus. Miyamoto played on the offensive line for former coach Roger
Harring from 1975-78 and graduated from UW-L in 1979. His coaching experience
includes positions at La Crosse Logan High School, UW-Madison, UW-River Falls,
and UW-L. In 1990 he was the offensive line coach for Harring. As assistant
coach, his various units set numerous league marks and saw post-season play.
Miyamoto, who holds a doctorate from UW-Madison, is the assistant dean of students
and on the graduate faculty at UW-L.
Tim Ebner, Running Backs. Coach Ebner is in his eighth year with
the Eagles’ staff. A 1989 graduate of UW-L, Ebner will coach the running
backs this season. He holds a master’s degree from UW-Madison (1991) and
served as a graduate assistant coach for Wisconsin from 1989-91. Ebner currently
serves as vice president of Ebner Properties in La Crosse.
Mike Durnin, Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Line. Coach Durnin
is in his seventh season as a member of the Eagles’ coaching staff. Durnin,
a 1981 graduate of UW-L, has coached at Minnesota State-Mankato, Yankton (S.D.)
College, University of Puget Sound and Illinois State University. Durnin played
quarterback at UW-L from 1977-80 and is tied for the school record with six
touchdown passes in a game. He also serves as Mitchell Hall Facilities Director.
Jeff Conway, Linebackers. Coach Conway is in his fourtht year
on the Eagles’ staff after serving as head coach at La Crescent (Minn.)
High School from 1996 to 2003 and winning the 1998 Coulee Conference Championship.
Conway, a 1980 graduate of the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), served as head
coach at Winona Cotter High School from 1992-95, winning a conference title
in 1995. He served as a graduate assistant at UW-L from 1988-91 and earned his
master’s degree in 1990.
Larry Noll, Cornerbacks. Coach Noll is in his third year on the Eagles’ staff. A 1983 graduate of UW-L, Noll spent 1997-2004 as head football coach at Sparta (Wis.) High School. He was named the 2001 Mississippi Valley Conference and La Crosse Tribune Coach of the Year. Noll led the Spartans to the state playoffs three of his last four seasons. He earned his master’s degree from UW-L in 2001. He played wide receiver and returned kicks at UW-L from 1979-82.
T.J. Mickschl, Safeties. Coach Mickschl is in his second season as a member of the UW-L coaching staff. Before coming to UW-L, Mickschl served as an assistant coach at La Crosse Aquinas High School from 1998-05. He was UW-L’s tight ends coach on the 1992 NCAA III Championships team and also worked as an assistant coach at Holmen High School for four years. Mickschl earned his bachelor’s (1994) and master’s (2002) degrees from UW-L. He played four years for the Eagles (1988-91) as UW-L made four appearances in the NAIA Playoffs and won two conference titles.
