UW-L Drops Fifth Straight with Loss to UW-Eau Claire

Winona, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with a 35-21 loss to UW-Eau Claire Saturday night at Maxwell Field. The Blugolds, ranked eighth on D3football.com, improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference. UW-Eau Claire has now won five of the last six meetings with UW-L.
The Blugolds took an early 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter as Kyle Paulson threw a pair of touchdown passes. He connected with David Goodman on a 40-yard touchdown pass with 10:38 left in the first and then hit Brett Schreiner for a 32-yard touchdown pass with 8:19 remaining to make it 14-0.
UW-L cut the lead to 14-6 with :09 remaining in the first quarter as Nick Anker hit Travis Bordeau for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Kyle Wojcik missed the extra-point. UW-Eau Claire took the ball on its next possession to take a 21-6 lead as Paulson and Schreiner connected for a second touchdown pass, this time from 11-yards out. The Eagles cut the margin to 21-14 as Anker hit Dan Sellers with a 15-yard touchdown pass with 8:35 left in the second quarter. Anker ran in the two-point conversion.
UW-Eau Claire took a 28-14 lead with 3:34 remaining in the first half on Cory Sartorelli's three-yard touchdown run. The Blugolds led 28-14 at halftime.
Paulson threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game with 2:44 left in the third quarter for 35-14 lead, hitting Spencer Kehoe on a 20-yard touchdown. Anker threw his third touchdown of the contest, and his second to Bordeau, for UW-L with 2:08 remaining from 35-yards out.
UW-Eau Claire finished with 402 yards of offense, including 95 rushing and 307 passing. Sartorelli had 25 rushes for 81 yards while Paulson finished 25-of-37 for 307 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Schreiner caught 10 passes for 129 yards. The Blugolds were five-of-15 on third-down and won the time of possession, 32:54 to 27:06.
UW-L totaled 262 yards, including 70 rushing and 192 passing. Eric Donoval finished with 49 yards rushing on 14 attempts while Anker was 11-of-33 throwing for 192 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Bordeau caught five passes for 118 yards and the two touchdowns. The Eagles were four-of-14 on third-down.
Paul Bielmeier led the Blugolds with eight tackles. Dustin Drath led the Eagles with nine tackles and one fumble recovery while Billy Niggeman and Drew Kiefer each had eight tackles.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, October 18 hosting UW-Platteville at 1 p.m. at Maxwell Field at Winona State University.
