UW-L Wins St. Olaf Invite; Place Second at Luther Invite

La Crosse, Wis. – The UW-La Crosse men’s cross country team opened its 2007 season with two meets Saturday. The Eagles captured the St. Olaf Invitational in Northfield, Minnesota while placing second at the Luther College All-American Invitational in Decorah, Iowa.

At St. Olaf, the Eagles took the team title with 83.0 points. UW-Platteville was second (105.0), followed by Iowa Central Community College (108.0), UW-Stevens Point (122.0) and Allegheny College, Pa. (132.0) to round out the top-five. A total of 27 teams participated.

Individually for UW-L, Paul Zdroik was fourth overall in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 25:43. Dan Thour placed 16th (26:09), Paul Moran 17th (26:10), Connor Lonning 22nd (26:16) and Logan O'Grady 24th (26:20) to give the Eagles five top-25 finishers.

Dallas Vincent placed 26th for the Eagles (26:26) while Ben Herdeman was 27th (26:26) and Kyle Coughlin 29th (26:33). Scott Hayden finished 29th (26:33), Tom Breitbach 58th (26:59), Ross MacDonald 60th (27:02), Chris Gilbert 63rd (27:02) and John Heitzman 72nd (27:10).

UW-L, ranked third in NCAA Division III, finished second at the Luther College All-American Invite with 34.0 points. Luther took the team title with 23.0 points.

Dan Pizzi was the Eagles' top finisher on the four-mile course with a time of 21:23. Connor Sparks placed sixth (21:31) for UW-L while Josh Hohensee was seventh (21:32), Sean Harrington eighth (21:34) and Wade Hassel 10th (21:42).
