Art Majors and Minors

Art Major

The major in Art is housed in the College of Liberal Studies and the School of Arts and Communication.  To earn a BS/BA in Art, a minimum of 120 credits must be earned, 40 of which must be taken in 300/400 (senior college level courses).  See UW-L Catalog for Undergraduate Requirements for Graduation.

REQUIRED:  48 credits including ART 160*, 162, 164, 166, 251, 252, and 262  (core curriculum); and one elective from 331, 332 and 341; three courses to be elected from ART 204, 205, 207, 214, 216, 218, 220, 221, and APH 202; and four courses to be elected from 303,  304, 305, 308, 314, 316, 318, 320, 321, 362, 405, 408, 413, 414, 416, 418, 419, 421, 425, and 462.  ART 399 is required to be taken in the junior year.  ART 499 is required to be taken in the senior year.

Art Minor - 2D

The minor is open to students in all schools and colleges within the university.  REQUIRED:  24 credits including 12 credits in the 2D Art Minor Core:  ART 160, 162, 164, and 252; 12 credits in a 2D Emphasis area (Choose from Drawing, Graphic Design, Painting, or Printmaking).

Art Minor - 3D

The minor is open to students in all schools and colleges within the university.  REQUIRED:  24 credits including 9 credits in the 3D Art Minor Core:  ART 160, 166, and 252; 6 credits of 200-level 3D studios (ART 214, 216, 220 or 221); and 9 credits in a 3D Emphasis area (Choose from Ceramics, Jewelry & Metalsmithing, or Sculpture).

Art Education Major

Effective Fall, 2008

Teacher Certification for Teaching Art:  Early Childhood-Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence-Adolescence.  REQUIRED:  64 credits including the Core Curriculum (ART 160, 162, 164, 166, 205, 251, 252, 262, 399, and 499 and one elective from 301, 331, 332, or 341) 399, 499; Studio Core I (200 level courses - 6 credits in the 2D area and 6 credits in the 3D area); Methods Core (7 credits; ART 401 and 302 should be taken before ART 403. ART 401 and 302 should be taken concurrently); and Studio Core II (studio courses at the 300/400 level.

Photography Minor

The 21 credit minor is open to students in all schools and colleges within the university.  The course array provides training and exploration in camera operations, film and print processing, digital imaging techniques, composition and image design, photojournalism, commercial photography, fine art expressive photography and the history and aesthetics of photography.  REQUIRED: 21 credits including APH 202, 232, 242, 312, and 492; and electives in APH chosen from APH, 300, 322, 342, 351, 372, 402, 413, 422 and 499.
