UW-L Splits Doubleheader with Viterbo

La Crosse, Wis. – The UW-La Crosse softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with city-rival Viterbo University Wednesday afternoon at Viterbo’s Outdoor Athletic Complex. The V-Hawks won the opener, designated the Wells Fargo Diamond Cup, by the score of 6-2 before the Eagles came back to take the nightcap, 11-3 in six innings. UW-L is now 15-8 on the season while Viterbo is 7-19.
In the opener, Viterbo scored four times in the bottom of the first on Betsy Ward’s grand slam. The V-Hawks led 5-0 in the second as Sara Davis had a run-scoring single.
UW-L cut the deficit to 5-1 in the top of the sixth on Sarah Pfeifer’s sacrifice fly scoring Rachel Croak. Viterbo regained its five-run lead with a run in the bottom of the inning. The Eagles finished the scoring in the seventh on Kelsey Golackson’s RBI single scoring Jess Iwanski.
Shelly Monahan took the loss for UW-L, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing six hits, five runs and one walk with one strikeout.
Liz Bradley was 3-for-3 at the plate for the Eagles.
In the nightcap, UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with Rachel Weyer scoring on a wild pitch. The Eagles tallied four times in the third as Weyer and Pfeifer each hit two-run home runs. Viterbo cut the lead to 5-2 after four innings, but UW-L scored twice in the fifth as Iwanski knocked in a run with a single and Sara Monahan drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Eagles scored four times in the top of the sixth. Bradley had an RBI single and Jenna Ahnen had a two-run double.
Cassie Huettl picked up the win, going 4.0 innings, allowing three hits, two runs and four walks with one strikeout.
Weyer, Bradley, Pfeifer and Ahnen each had two hits for the Eagles.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, April 12 hosting UW-Whitewater in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. at North Campus Field.
