Hunter and Wahl Selected to All-WIAC First Team; Stevens Named to All-Sportsmanship Team
For Immediate Release: Thursday, March 6, 2008
Madison, Wis. – University of Wisconsin-La Crosse junior forwards Mackenzie Hunter of Eau Claire (Regis) and Lindsay Wahl of Burnsville, Minn. (H.S.) have been selected to the 2007-08 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Basketball First Team in a vote by league coaches.
It marks the first time since the 1987-88 season (Marion Bialobrzeski, Maureen Vorwald) UW-L has had two players named to the all-conference first team. The Eagles have now had an All-WIAC First Team selection in seven of the last eight seasons.
UW-L senior guard Mandy Stevens of Hartland (Arrowhead) was named to the 2007-08 WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Hunter becomes the fifth player in UW-L history to earn first team all-conference honors twice in her career. She was named All-WIAC First Team in 2005-06. Hunter, who was also named to the all-conference honorable mention team in 2006-07, is the third player in school history to earn three all-conference selections, joining Donna Freese (1981-84) and Michelle Johnson (1992-95). No player has ever been named to the all-conference team for four years.
A starter in all 26 games in 2007-08, Hunter led UW-L with 14.9 points per game while also averaging 4.0 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.4 assists. She scored in double figures in 21 contests, including a career-high 28 points against UW-Whitewater January 30. Her 388 points this year is tied for 15th in single-season school history. Hunter also led UW-L in minutes (27.8 per game), field goals made (156) and attempted (341), three-point field goals made (14) and free throw shooting (84.9%) this season.
Hunter, who has started 77 of 79 career games for the Eagles, ranks 15th in school history in career points (991) while being first in free throw shooting (83.7%, 164-of-196). She is also fifth in career three-point field goal shooting (37.3%) while ranking ninth in three-point field goals made (53) and 12th in attempts (142).
She currently ranks third in the WIAC in scoring while being fourth in free throw shooting (84.9%), 11th in field goal shooting (45.7%) and tied for 12th in steals (1.77 per game).
Wahl earned her first career all-conference selection this year after starting all 26 games. She finished second on the team in scoring (12.7) while ranking first in rebounding (4.8), field goal shooting (50.5%) and free throws made (125) and attempted (170). Wahl scored in double figures in 16 contests, including a career-high 27 points at UW-River Falls January 23. She scored at least 10 points in nine of the last 11 games of the season.
A three-year letter winner at UW-L, Wahl set single-season school records this year with 125 free throws made and 170 attempted. She ranks sixth in career free throws made (201) and tied for sixth in attempts (307). Her 47.8% career field goal shooting is 11th in UW-L history.
