Brown Gives UW-L Win in Season Opener

Sheboygan, Wis. Brandon Brown's layup with :01 remaining gave the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team a 70-68 victory at Lakeland College Saturday night in the season-opener for both squads.
UW-L raced out to a 7-0 lead to start the game and were ahead 26-15 with 6:10 left in the first half. The Eagles led 36-22 at halftime.
The Eagles led 45-29 with 16:47 remaining in the game when the Muskies went on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 45-39 with 14:23 left. UW-L led by 10 at 49-39, but Lakeland went on another 10-0 run to tie the contest at 49-49 with 10:17 remaining. UW-L later led 56-51 before Lakeland took its first lead of the game at 58-56 with 5:28 remaining, but the Eagles went on a 12-4 run to lead 68-62 with 2:18 left.
Lakeland came back to tie it at 68-68 with :07 remaining as Kris Saiberlich hit one-of-two free throws, setting up Brown's game-winning layup with :01 left.
Billy Kegler led UW-L with 25 points and nine rebounds, finishing nine-of-16 from the field and seven-of-10 at the line. Brown totaled 16 points, six steals, four rebounds and four assists. He was seven-of-16 from the field and two-of-three at the line.
Tony Mane added nine points while Chris Fehrenbach and TJ Nereng each had eight.
UW-L shot 39.1% from the field, including 14.3% (two-of-14) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 51.7% (15-of-29) from the field in the first half and 28.6% (10-of-35) in the second half. UW-L was 18-of-24 (75.0%) at the free throw line for the game and finished with seven turnovers.
Saiberlich led Lakeland with 18 points. The Muskies shot 38.2% from the field, including 26.1% (six-of-23) from three-point range. The team was 20-of-35 (57.1%) at the line.
UW-L returns to action Tuesday, November 20 at city-rival Viterbo University at 8 p.m.
