Head Coach Ken Koelbl

Ken Koelbl completed his fourth season as head men's basketball coach at UW-La Crosse in 2006-07, leading the Eagles to a 19-8 overall record and 12-4 mark in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Eagles’ 12 conference wins were the most since 1982-83 (12-4) and the team recorded its second consecutive winning season for the first time since 1987-88 (18-10) and 1988-89 (15-12). UW-L finished 20-8 last year.

The Eagles advanced to the 2007 WIAC Tournament Championship for the first time in school history, falling 83-68 to top-ranked UW-Stevens Point February 24. Koelbl has compiled an overall record of 57-48 overall and 30-34 in the WIAC after his first four seasons.

He led the Eagles to a breakthrough year in 2005-06 as UW-L finished 20-8 overall and 10-6 in the WIAC. The 20 overall wins were the most since 1982-83 (20-7) while the 10 conference victories were the most since 2001-02 (10-6). The Eagles made their first ever appearance in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament, falling 79-71 to Calvin College (Mich.) in Holland, Michigan.

ken koelbl men's basketballKoelbl served as an assistant coach at UW-Stevens Point from 1995-2003. He also served as the Pointers’ recruiting coordinator and basketball camp administrator/instructor. Koelbl helped lead the Pointers to four straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, including the 2002-03 season when the team finished 24-4 overall. UW-Stevens Point advanced to the NCAA III Tournament “Elite Eight” in 1997 and 2000.

Koelbl, who earned his bachelor’s degree from Viterbo University (1990) and master’s degree from South Dakota State University (1994), was an assistant coach at Viterbo from 1990-92 before serving as a graduate assistant coach at South Dakota State from 1992-94. Following his position at South Dakota State, Koelbl served as head assistant coach at St. Mary’s (Minn.) University from 1994-95.

A 1996 inductee into the Viterbo University Athletic Hall of Fame, Koelbl was a NAIA Baseball and Basketball District 14 selection in 1990.

A native of Onalaska, Wis., Koelbl and his wife, Ellen, have three children, Kyle (1997), Kelsey (1999) and Kevin (2000).

Assistant Coaches

Aaron Bonnett completed his first year on UW-L’s staff in 2006-07 after serving as an assistant coach at UW-Stevens Point the last five seasons. The Pointers won three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) titles and two National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships while Bonnett served as an assistant. Bonnett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ripon College (Wis.) and his master’s in education at UW-Stevens Point. He served as the varsity assistant basketball coach at Adams-Friendship (Wis.) High School for three years after graduating from Ripon. Bonnett, a graduate of Adams-Friendship where he played basketball, football and baseball, helped lead the team to three conference titles as an assistant coach. The Green Devils also made two state tournament appearances, including a second-place finish in 1999.

Staunton Peck is in his first year on the Eagles’ coaching staff in 2007-08 as a graduate assistant. Prior to coming to UW-L, Peck coached with the Rising Stars AAU basketball program in Deerfield, Illinois and at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois. He earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Hamilton College (N.Y.) and was a member of the Continentals' basketball team. Peck was a two-year team captain at Hamilton and helped lead the team to two NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. He was an all-conference honorable mention selection. A graduate of New Trier High School, Peck was a three-year starter and all-conference player. He helped lead the team to two conference titles and a berth in the final eight at the state tournament his junior year.

Doug Russell finished his fourth year on the Eagles’ coaching staff in 2006-07. Russell coached for 23 years at the high school level, including 17 seasons at Tomah (Wis.). He compiled an overall record of 260-186. Russell was named the Coulee Region Coach of the Year in 1994 when Tomah made its first appearance at the state tournament in 40 years. Russell served as an assistant coach in the 1994 Division 1 All-Star Game. He also served as head coach of the Division I All-Stars in 2000. Russell was a varsity assistant coach at Colfax (Wis.) HIgh School in 1978 when the team captured the Class C State Championship. He earned his bachelor's degree from UW-Stevens Point in 1976 and his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1993.
