Campus Campaign Social is May 7
Learn more about the campaign at a Campus Campaign Social from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. Enjoy music, beverages and hors d'oeuvres, and view an updated virtual tour of the planned $44 million Academic Building, the largest building project in city history. A campaign update is slated for 5-5:30 p.m.


State of the Web at UW-L info meeting set
Educational Technologies is hosting "State of the Web at UW-L" from 3-4 p.m. Thursday, May 8,  in 102 Wing. Everyone is invited to attend the Web update and discussion. The session will demonstrate who is utilizing UW-L's Web site, as well as when and where. Additionally, information will be presented on the migration process of the templates, training feedback, upcoming plans and other topics. A panel question and answer period will wrap up the meeting. The session will also be Web-streamed live at www.uwlax.edu/edtech/media/theweb and cablecast over campus TV channel 6. Retirement receptions planned
There will be a retirement party for Al Torstveit from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in the Physical Plant. The English Department hosts a retirement reception for Terry Beck, from 2:30-4 p.m. Friday, May 9, in 409 Wimberly Hall. Refreshments will be served. A retirement reception for Leslie Oganowski is set for  3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at the Allen Center in the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center: Oganowski is retiring after 26 years from the health education and health promotion  department.


English department to host 'Steam Ticket' Release Party
Join students and staff for the "Steam Ticket" Release Party from 3-7 p.m. Monday, May 5, in the Ward Room, Cartwright Center. The book, published by English department students, includes a selection students' art, poems and fiction. Refreshments will be served.


Adopt-a-Highway crew sets year's first clean-up
The university's Adopt-a-Highway crew is planning its first trash pick up of the year Monday, May 19. You're welcome to join the crew! A car pool leaves old Hardee's South parking lot, 2505 State Road, at 5:30 p.m. Work gets underway around 6 at the intersection of Korn Clements Road and Highway 33. The more than two-mile route on Highway 33 travels through Middle Ridge to Korn Coulee Road, near the La Crosse-Monroe county line. The group will meet for a potluck reception following the clean-up. The crew is open to all university employees and their families. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and gloves. Spring 2008 commencement ceremonies slated
Saturday, May 17, marks the 99th spring commencement at UW-L. All ceremonies will be held in the Mitchell Hall Gymnasium and will last approximately 1 1/2 hours. 
Ceremonies include:

  • 9 a.m. - College of Business Administration (212 students)
  • 11 a.m. - College of Liberal Studies (443 students)
  • 2 p.m. - Graduate Studies (414 students)
  • 5:30 p.m. - College of Science and Health (464 students)

Students do not need to obtain tickets for their guests to attend commencement. Parking is available in any of the lots. Permits are not required.  Faculty who plan to attend should contact their dean's office. The Campus Bookstore can still order commencement garb in time for the ceremonies; however, since it is past the order deadline, shipping fees will be charged. Faculty line up begins one-half hour before the ceremony in Room 119 Mitchell Hall. The ceremonies will be Webcast and cablecast. To view any of the commencement ceremonies, http://www.uwlax.edu/edtech/graduation/.  You can see the cablecast of the ceremonies on Charter Cable TV-6. Charter subscribers in Holmen, West Salem, La Crosse, La Crescent, St Joseph's Ridge, Bangor, Rockland, Mindoro, Melrose, Black River Falls and Sparta can view the ceremonies. The ceremonies will also be available on every campus TV in classrooms and residence halls.


Wanted: La Crosse Bike to Work Week participants
Community challenge to win a "Coveted Golden Helmet" award
UW-L faculty and staff. Help UW-L compete with area businesses and schools for a Coveted Golden Helmet award. Plan to bike to work during Bike to Work Week Saturday through Friday, May 3-9. Three "Coveted Golden Helmet" awards are being offered as incentives for employees to work together to bike to work. The first award will be offered to the employer with the greatest number of employees who bike to work or school at least one day during Bike to Work Week. The second and third awards will be offered to two businesses that have the greatest percentage of employees who bike to work at least one day during Bike to Work Week. One of the percentage awards will go to the employer with up to 20 employees and the other to an employer with more than 20 employees. To qualify, all bikers must register at www.Couleebikes.org  by noon Friday, May 9. The  Coveted Golden Helmet awards are traveling trophies to display. Let's bring home the gold! World Café: shaping our futures through conversations that matter
Campus Climate staff members are hosting a World Café event from 2:30-4 p.m. Friday, May 9, in Port O' Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. The topic is the Inclusive Excellence Model proposed by UW System to further its efforts toward diversity and inclusion. Through conversation, the event hopes to inspire groups to understand the model and explore diversity and inclusion. The World Café provides an opportunity for students, staff and faculty to come together, increase knowledge and make a difference. The Organization of Campus Women (OCW) Annual Family Picnic runs from 4:30-6:30 p.m.  Thursday, May 15, in the Myrick Park Gun Shelter. Women faculty, staff and graduate students and their friends and family are invited to attend. Stress-Free for Finals events planned
Valuable and practical tools to help maintain balance

  • Wednesday, May 7
    Experience uplifting form of mind body work on Pilates Apparatus. Certified Pilates trainers will be available to assist you in experimenting on traditional Pilates apparatuses from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Recreational Eagle Center lobby. The Pilates method is a physical movement program designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body. Pilates is performed on a mat or apparatus that Joseph Pilates designed: Reformer, Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair, High Back Chair, Ladder Barrel, Half Barrel, Spine Corrector, Ped-O-Pul, Head Harness, Foot Corrector, Toe Corrector, Magic Circle, Bean Bag and Pinwheel.
  • Thursday, May 8
    Free cookies and tips for coping with college finals. Drop by the Recreational Eagle Center lobby between 11 a.m.-noon or 1-2 p.m. You can also participate in the activity "Ways to Cope When It Feels Like Things are Crumbling!" from noon-1 p.m. in the multi-purpose room with Counseling Intern Stephanie Thorson.
    Yoga: what is it and why should I do it? This session from 1-2 p.m. in the Eagle Recreational Center Fitness Studio will balance theory and practice as participants explore benefits, breathing techniques and practical applications of yoga. Everyone welcome from beginners to experienced yoga practitioners. You don't need to bring anything except comfortable clothing and an open mind. Yoga mats will be provided.
  • Friday, May 9
    Meditation: relaxing, focusing, fun. Join Scott Stine from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the Recreational Eagle Center Fitness Studio for an interactive session on the basic goals and methods of meditation in a relaxed and fun way. Participants will leave the session more relaxed, focused and with the tools to stay that way throughout finals week.
  • Monday, May 12
    Relaxation extravaganza. Stressed out? Stop by Port O' Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for some relaxation between finals. Come in and just "chill" or enjoy some art therapy, pet therapy, chair massages, relaxing music and more.
