Transfer students

Admission guidelines

For Fall 2008, transfer students will be considered for admission based on the following criteria:
  1. Students with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in all previous college-level course work (based on a 4.0 scale) will be considered for admission.

    One exception to the above criteria is acceptable: students from a UW College (freshman/sophomore campuses) who have earned, or will earn, an associate degree or 60 credits with a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or above will be admitted.

  2. Students with a cumulative grade point average between a 2.00 and 2.99 will be considered for admission if space is available.
  3. Students who were not admissible as new freshmen must have earned at least 18 semester credits and earn at least a 3.0 grade point average to be considered strong candidates for admission as transfer students.

To provide the social and cultural diversity essential to a comprehensive university and to meet institutional and system priority objectives, exceptions may be made to provide admission for special populations including, but not limited to, veterans, multicultural students, disadvantaged students, international students, nontraditional students and students with special talents.

Please note: Admission to UW-L does not assure admission to specific degree programs. All transfer students must meet the same criteria (e.g. grade point average, course requirements, etc.) for admission to specific majors or programs as continuing students.

Steps to apply:

UW-L will begin accepting applications on:
  • Jan. 1 for fall semester
  • Sept. 1 for spring semester
  1. On or shortly after the above dates, applicants should complete admission records by submitting the following:
    • The UW System Application for admission;
    • Official high school transcript (Materials may be mailed to UW-La Crosse Admissions, 115 Graff Main Hall, 1725 State Street, La Crosse, WI  54601);
    • ACT/SAT scores (if applicant has earned less than 18 semester or 24 quarter credits;
    • Official college transcripts (must be mailed directly from the institution[s] attended) (Materials may be mailed to UW-La Crosse Admissions, 115 Graff Main Hall, 1725 State Street, La Crosse, WI  54601);
    • If the applicant is presently taking courses, the applicant should submit a list of courses in progress, with course numbers, titles and number of credits for each course;
    • Non-refundable $44 fee, unless transferring directly from a UW College two-year campus.
  2. Upon receipt of the application, fee (if required), official transcripts, and if applicable, a list of courses in progress, the Admissions Office will review application materials to determine admissibility.  If the applicant is admissible, the Admissions Office will forward the applicant an official acceptance letter. Included with the acceptance letter will be a credit evaluation indicating all of the courses and credits that have been granted in transfer. The number of credits granted will be used to determine your classification as freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior. Also, applicants will receive a SNAP report (Student Notice of Academic Progress) which is an individualized, automated degree audit. This report is the academic advising map and is specific to each student's catalog term, general education, college core, major/minor and graduation requirements.
  3. After being admitted to the university, all transfer students will be sent information regarding Web registration and academic advising.  The registration instructions and class schedule will be forwarded in April for those students admitted to the summer session and fall semester, and in November for those students admitted to the spring semester.
  4. In preparing to register, many transfer students find that the SNAP report is sufficient. Others would like some assistance with their SNAP report by meeting personally with an academic adviser. Applicants are welcome to call and make an appointment with an adviser from the college or school assigned. Assignments are noted on the admission letter.

  6. All General Education requirements may be satisfied if the applicant has completed an associate degree in college parallel programs at accredited four-year institutions, two-year collegiate transfer programs at two-year institutions, community colleges or junior colleges. Applicants must still meet all core, professional, diversity and major/minor requirements.
  7. In accordance with a new UW System transfer policy, UW-La Crosse can now accept up to 30 credits (additional credit with articulated programs) from the Wisconsin Technical College System institutions without first having earned an associate degree. Courses in communication skills, social science and natural science are transferable.  Applicants can access UW System Transfer Information System or contact the Admissions Office for various equivalents.

Transfer guides:

Course equivalency tables have been developed for a number of common transfer institutions. These indicate how a course from one institution will transfer to UW-La Crosse, and if there are any additional program transfer agreements in place.
